The Nazis besieged the city for three years, and the corpse-strewn Leningrad became a city of death. British journalist Kate Davies (played by Mira Sorvino) loses contact with her lover, American reporter Philip Parker (played by Gabriel Byrne), while on the front lines and becomes trapped in Leningrad. Isolated and helpless, Kate receives help and shelter from Nina, a female police officer of the Leningrad Volunteer Army (played by Olga Sutulova).
