In 1959, Che Guevara (played by Benicio Del Toro) and Fidel Castro (played by Rodrigo Santoro) led the guerrilla organization "26th of July Movement" to finally overthrow the Batista regime and establish a new government in Cuba. However, as time passed, Che and Fidel gradually developed differences in their governance ideologies, leading Che to resign from his important government position and renounce his family and Cuban citizenship to once again engage in the fight for the liberation of the Third World. After many twists and turns, Che arrived in Bolivia, where he joined forces with the Bolivian National Liberation Army to initiate a guerrilla revolutionary movement. Upon learning of Che's arrival, Bolivian President René Barrientos (played by Joaquim de Almeida) decided to eliminate this troublesome revolutionary at all costs... To authentically and thoroughly portray the revolutionary years of Che Guevara, renowned American director Steven Soderbergh took 4 hours to depict this legendary hero. Ultimately, to meet theatrical distribution needs, the film was divided into two parts for release. The film won the Best Actor Award at the 2008 Cannes Film Festival and received a nomination for the Palme d'Or.
