Wealthy Mississippi plantation owner "Big Daddy" (Burl Ives) is preparing to celebrate his sixty-fifth birthday, while his two sons, Cooper (Jack Carson) and Blake (Paul Newman), each accompanied by their wives, are on their way to the birthday party. However, "Big Daddy" is unaware that he is terminally ill with cancer. The elder son Cooper, a lawyer managing a large estate, and his wife Mae (Madeleine Sherwood) have several children and are eager to inherit their father's million-dollar fortune. In contrast to his brother's seemingly perfect life, Blake, a former football star, is sinking deeper into alcoholism. Ever since the suicide of his old friend a year ago, he has refused to share a bedroom with his devoted wife Maggie (Elizabeth Taylor), suspecting her of infidelity with the deceased friend. Losing all faith, Blake begins to question the meaning of life. This film is adapted from the play of the same name by Tennessee Williams and received 11 nominations, including the Academy Award, Golden Globe Award, and BAFTA Award in 1959.
