Wealthy Mississippi plantation owner "Big Daddy" (Burl Ives) is preparing to celebrate his sixty-fifth birthday, while his two sons, Cooper (Jack Carson) and Blake (Paul Newman), each accompanied by their wives, are on their way to the birthday party. However, "Big Daddy" is unaware that he is terminally ill with cancer. The elder son Cooper, a lawyer managing a large estate, and his wife Mae (Madeleine Sherwood) have several children and are eager to inherit their father's million-dollar fortune.
