During the American Civil War, the continuous battles and the Southern army's setbacks leave soldier Inman (played by Jude Law) disheartened. To see his lover Ada (played by Nicole Kidman) again, he leaves the army and embarks on a long journey home. In his hometown, the remote Cold Mountain, Ada also suffers from the hardships of life and the pain of waiting. The death of her father and the departure of slaves makes it hard for the once privileged Ada to continue living. With the help of mountain girl Ruby Thewes (played by Renée Zellweger), Ada gradually learns to struggle against the rough and harsh realities around her while waiting for Inman's return. Through the ongoing war, Cold Mountain is the only connection between them, where, even if all past beliefs in paradise have crumbled, it can still heal wounds and alleviate pain.
