The story begins in Poland in 1949, just after World War II, with the intensifying confrontation between capitalism and socialism. Victor (Tomasz Kot) is a musician who is forming a youth folk music ensemble to promote the country’s culture through traditional Polish songs and dances. Producer Irena (Agata Kulesza) and supervising officer Kaczmarek (Borys Szyc) are also involved in this project. A girl named Zula (Joanna Kulig) catches Victor's attention, and although Kaczmarek does not believe this complex-background girl is a suitable candidate for the ensemble, Victor is determined to have her join. As time goes by, the two fall in love.
