Far from Istanbul in Anatolia, retired theatre actor Aydin (played by Haluk Bilginer) embarks on a new life as a columnist. He pretends to care as he writes religious articles day after day, becoming entrenched in the seemingly profound world of thoughts he has created for himself. Aydin runs a hotel with his pension and owns several rental properties, which, in his interactions with ordinary people, reveal an added layer of hypocrisy and coldness. His sister Nihal (played by Demet Akbag) divorced early on and often curls up in Aydin's study to argue about writing, even mocking and attacking each other. His wife Nihal (played by Melisa Sözen), young and independent, is passionate about various charitable causes. The old man and young woman, who spend little time together and have vastly different attitudes towards life, are drifting apart, leading to cracks in their relationship... This film won the Palme d'Or at the 2014 Cannes Film Festival.
