On Christmas in 1183, the aging King Henry II of England (played by Peter O'Toole) decides to elect an heir to the throne. Henry II instructs his estranged wife Eleanor (played by Katharine Hepburn) to bring back their three sons: Richard (played by Anthony Hopkins), Geoffrey (played by John Castle), and John (played by Nigel Terry) to the palace for a reunion, hoping to choose an heir. However, there are significant disagreements between Henry II and Eleanor regarding the successor, and Henry II's mistress, Alais (played by Jane Merrow), is also entangled in the matter. Furthermore, the young and cunning King Philip of France (played by Timothy Dalton) joins in the court's power struggle. This film is adapted from James Goldman's play of the same name and won 3 Academy Awards, including Best Actress, Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Score, while receiving 4 nominations at the 41st Academy Awards in 1969. It also won 2 Golden Globe Awards for Best Motion Picture - Drama and Best Actor - Drama, with 5 nominations at the 26th Golden Globe Awards in 1969.
