The film is adapted from the bestselling novel of the same name by British Booker Prize nominee Patrick McCabe. It tells the story of Patrick Braden (played by Cillian Murphy), a cross-dressing boy in the 1970s, who, despite societal condemnation, never changes himself and continuously searches for his mother. Patrick was abandoned by his parents as an infant and was adopted by a priest (played by Liam Neeson). However, he has always loved wearing girls' clothes and fantasizes about being a girl. He doesn't know who his mother is or where she is now. As Patrick grows up, he wears a golden wig and heavy makeup, refusing to let anyone change him, but little does he know how this harsh environment can tolerate such an "outsider." Along the way, Patrick meets a variety of strangers in his quest to find his mother. The lead actor Cillian Murphy received a nomination for Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy at the 63rd Golden Globe Awards for his outstanding performance in "Breakfast On Pluto."
