Daniel (played by Michael Nyqvist) is a conductor renowned for his exceptional skills and enjoys high acclaim worldwide. As time passes, his body gradually can no longer support his passion for music, and a sudden heart attack forces him to bid farewell to the stage forever. To recover, Daniel returns to his long-lost hometown, where he becomes the conductor of the church choir. Daniel is quite frustrated by the halt in his career, but in the picturesque hometown, he finds a new meaning in life. Meanwhile, for the villagers, Daniel's arrival and his passion and dedication to music make this quiet little town shine. The film was nominated for Best Foreign Language Film at the 77th Academy Awards in 2005, marking the 14th time a Swedish film has appeared as an Oscar nominee.
