Will (Hugh Grant) is a wealthy man in London. He inherited his father's fortune and spends his days indulging in pleasure and womanizing. However, he feels empty and lonely inside. To meet more women, he thinks of joining a single parents' group. There are many single mothers there, which he believes will work to his advantage. With this goal in mind, he pretends to be a single dad and joins the group.Max (Nicholas Hoult)'s mother is also a member of the group. Every morning, she wakes up feeling depressed, in tears, and thinks about suicide. Max comes from an unhappy family and is often bullied; he looks to Will as a reliable figure. He frequently visits Will's home, quietly sitting next to him while watching TV. At first, Will finds this very annoying. However, slowly, the two lonely hearts start to rely on each other, and the friendship between Will and the young boy gradually warms up.
