The story takes place in Australia in 1880, where the relationship between the police and the gangsters has reached a freezing point. Everyone knows that if things continue to develop this way, a violent conflict is inevitable. The actions of the outlaw Arthur (Danny Huston) propel the events in a worse direction, as he escapes after carrying out a bloody massacre at the home of local resident Hopkins. Seeing that his brother has lost his sanity, Charles (Guy Pearce) decides to take Mike (Richard Wilson) and flee. In a critical moment, Sheriff Stanley (Ray Winstone) subdues Charles and kidnaps Mike, using Mike's life as leverage to demand that Charles kill the insane Arthur. Both sides are bound by deep brotherly love, and Charles finds himself in a difficult dilemma.
