A sensational topic that shocked the times. Yamada spent five years conceptualizing it and took a year to film across Japan from south to north. With Japan's economic boom, Seiin, a coal miner in his hometown of Nagasaki, decided to venture to Hokkaido with his wife, children, and elderly father after his company went bankrupt. The family endured countless hardships on their journey from Nagasaki to Hakata, Osaka, and Tokyo... With a unique road movie style filled with documentary filming techniques, the story gains tremendous impact; it is filled with family affection while also expressing the pain of loss. The two crosses on the desolate hill bring tears to the eyes. In pursuit of her husband's dreams, the wife convinces her grandfather to take the children and leaves their familiar, tranquil island for a distant small town. Along the way, they pass through places like Nagasaki, Osaka, and Tokyo, where everything in the cities feels fresh and exciting, yet strange and cold. Just as they hold dreams and long for a bright future, fate plays a cruel joke on them: their beloved daughter dies during the journey, and soon after arriving in the small town, the grandfather also passes away. The winter town is blanketed in snow, cold and sorrowful. They feel lost and hopeless, but the villagers' warmth and concern reignite their hopes for life. They look forward to the thawing of ice and snow, longing for the arrival of spring. In June, spring finally comes, with lush green pastures and new life, everything seems belated yet delightful and unforgettable.
