The film projector repairman Bruno (played by Rüdiger Vogler) roams the German countryside in his large truck, doing odd jobs for rural cinemas, hoping to find a steady job and meet the woman of his life. After separating from his wife, child language research expert Robert (played by Hanns Zischler) drives alone on the road; during the journey, his car is driven into a river, seemingly an attempt at suicide. Passing by, Bruno happens to encounter him and helps him out of his predicament. Afterward, Robert and Bruno share a tacit understanding as they travel together in Bruno's truck through the German countryside, showing films at cinemas. They witness the invasion of American culture on the German film industry, leading to the decline of German cinema, and experience the solitude and alienation along the way together. Just as their friendship grows closer, the two men, who are both accustomed to loneliness, must face a separation that is in stark contrast to their connection. "King of the Road" is the most successful film in Wim Wenders' "Road Trilogy," following "Alice in the Cities" and "Wrong Move," and won the FIPRESCI Prize at the Cannes Film Festival in 1976.
