This film is based on true events. In 1933, notorious bank robber John Dillinger (played by Johnny Depp) and his accomplice John Hamilton (played by Jason Clarke) armed themselves and successfully broke out members of their robbery gang from an Indiana prison, including "Pretty Boy" Floyd (played by Channing Tatum) and "Baby Face" Nelson (played by Stephen Graham), and hid in the farmhouse of corrupt cop Martin (played by John Michael Bolger). Martin persuades Dillinger to hide in Chicago and seek protection from gangsters. During a series of bank robberies, Dillinger falls in love with Chicago clerk Billie Frechette (played by Marion Cotillard). Meanwhile, FBI agent Melvin Purvis (played by Christian Bale) is promoted by his boss, Director Hoover (played by Billy Crudup), and vows to capture Dillinger during America's first "War on Crime."
