The news that her brother Kenny (played by Sam Rockwell) has been convicted of murder deeply unsettles Betty (played by Hilary Swank), who refuses to believe that kind-hearted Kenny could commit such a heinous crime. Stubbornly, Betty decides to pursue the truth and fight to clear Kenny's name. However, things are not as easy as she hoped. Betty did not finish high school and currently has no stable job or income. Worse yet, she is not alone; she is a single mother with two children. Under the dual pressure of life and society, Betty begins to teach herself law. Over the next 12 years, her relentless effort pays off as she eventually earns a law degree. Meanwhile, the investigation into Kenny’s case continues, but the unpromising evidence and testimonies repeatedly chip away at Betty's confidence. Is Kenny really innocent? What is the truth?
