Nic (Annette Bening) and Jules (Julianne Moore) are a long-term same-sex couple with two children: 18-year-old Joni (Mia Wasikowska) and 15-year-old Laser (Josh Hutcherson). Nic's demanding medical career often causes her to overlook Jules' relatively calm life until one day, Laser suggests to his sister that he wants to meet the man who donated his sperm. Since Joni has just turned 18, she has the right to request this from her family. Nic and Jules agree to the siblings' wishes, and they meet their biological father, Paul (Mark Ruffalo). But what happens after they meet? Will this quiet and happy family face cracks as a result?
