In her prime, the Austrian star Hedy Lamarr (then known as Hedy Kiesler) played the role of a young wife, Eve, married to an older man. Unsatisfied sexually, she falls in love with a young knight, Adam, which ultimately drives her husband to suicide. The film won Best Director at the 2nd Venice Film Festival. Though recognized as an art film, it faced censorship in the U.S. due to the numerous nude scenes of the female body. Hedy, young and naïve at the time, went along with the director's vision, participating in revealing and passionate scenes, including swimming nude in a lake, running naked in the woods, and expressing "ecstasy" during intimate moments with the young knight, which was quite bold in the 1930s. Fortunately, the director also employed many symbolic depictions, making the film as elegant and poetic as possible, and the choice of names for the lead characters, Adam and Eve, was unmistakably symbolic. This film catapulted Hedy to fame and launched her career into the Hollywood film industry as a major star.
