In July 2014, expectant parents Irka and Tolik lived in the Donetsk region of eastern Ukraine, close to the Russian border, an area controversial in the early years of the Donbas war. The looming disaster of the MH17 crash intensified the chilling tension enveloping their village, sharply interrupting their anxious anticipation of their first child's birth. The imminent wreckage of the downed aircraft and the approaching procession of mourners underscored the surreal trauma of the moment.
