During World War II, the German Nazis brought the war to Czech territory, resulting in a haze of smoke and chaos. However, in a village train station in the Czech Republic, there lived a group of carefree optimists who were unfazed by the conflict. The obsequious stationmaster Max (played by Vladimír Valenta), the womanizing Hubička (Josef Somr), the female clerk Zdenka (Vlastimil Brodský) who is constantly thinking about fooling around with Hubička, and the shy apprentice Míra (Václav Neckár). Thanks to them, the dreary country station is filled with laughter and joy. Míra is in love with the female train conductor Masa (Jitka Scoffin), but during their joyful moments, he discovers he is impotent! This causes Míra to lose the will to live… This film won the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film in 1968.
