After World War II, Rome, like many cities, was filled with unemployment and poverty. People often fought tooth and nail for a job opportunity. After much effort, Rici (Lamberto Maggiorani) finally secured a job posting posters, but he was troubled by the fact that this job required a bicycle. In order to make ends meet, he traded his wife's dowry—bed sheets—to retrieve a bicycle he had previously pawned. However, on his first day of work, his bicycle was stolen. Rici and his son Bruno (Enzo Staiola) searched the streets of Rome for the bicycle he depended on for survival, but they couldn't find it. Faced with the prospect of hopeless days returning, Rici decided to take revenge, but his luck was not as good as that of other thieves.
