Reporter Chuck (played by Kirk Douglas), who is broke, finds himself in a small town in New Mexico. He eloquently pitches his talents to the editor of a local newspaper, claiming he has a genius for creating news. The quiet life in the small town makes Chuck, who once worked in New York, feel incredibly bored. One day, the editor sends Chuck out to cover a story, and on the way, he unexpectedly encounters a local shop owner, Leo, who is trapped in a cave. Chuck's keen sense of news value alerts him to the situation, and he quickly contacts the governor, a rescue team, and a doctor. As Chuck writes article after article, more and more onlookers arrive to witness the rescue process. Leo's wife, who initially wanted to leave, chooses to stay when she sees a profit opportunity and aligns herself with Chuck. Chuck arranges for a time-consuming rescue method to maintain the news coverage's intensity. Over several days, crowds continue to flock, and the rescue site becomes like an amusement park. While Chuck negotiates with his old boss in New York, Leo reaches the end of his life in the cave... The film was nominated for the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay in 1952.
