Danny Balint (played by Ryan Gosling), a Jewish youth living in New York, was once an outstanding student at a Hebrew school, but during his studies, he continually questioned the Old Testament and his own people's beliefs. His doubts left the school bewildered, ultimately resulting in his expulsion. Danny then developed a hatred for his Jewish peers, consciously reaching out to neo-Nazi groups and eventually becoming a member of the KKK... The film is based on true events, with the character's real-life counterpart, Dan Burros, participating in both American neo-Nazi organizations and the KKK. After a journalist exposed his Jewish identity, Dan committed suicide. The film won the Jury Award at the 2001 Sundance Film Festival and the Best Foreign Language Film Actor (Ryan Gosling) from the Russian Critics Association in 2001.
