Boris (Larry David), a physicist graduated from the University of Chicago, considers himself a genius and is extremely pessimistic about the world and human nature. After an inexplicable breakup with his wife, he attempts suicide by jumping off a building, quits his job, and moves to Manhattan, New York, where he makes a living teaching chess to kids. One evening, he discovers a naive girl named Melody (Evan Rachel Wood), who has run away from home in Mississippi, at his doorstep. Melody asks Boris to take her in, and although he reluctantly agrees to let her stay for one night, he does not expect that she not only holds his genius in high regard but also praises him in front of her peers and gradually falls in love with him. Despite a significant age difference of over forty years, they decide to get married. Soon, Melody's mother Marietta (Patricia Clarkson), who was abandoned by her husband, visits from Mississippi and falls in love at first sight with Boris's friend Kevin (Adam Brooks). Kevin helps Marietta become a photographer, but dissatisfied with Boris, Marietta tries every means to break him and Melody apart…
