The story takes place during the Crusades. Robin (played by Kevin Costner) is imprisoned, and along with two fellow inmates, he kills a guard and successfully escapes. During their flight, one of the inmates unfortunately dies, and in his last moments, he entrusts his belongings to Robin, asking him to deliver them to his sister Maria (played by Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio). The other inmate, Azeem (played by Morgan Freeman), becomes Robin's most loyal ally.
In a twist of fate, the fallen Robin encounters a group of outlaws comprised of the poor in the forest. With his courage and wisdom, Robin inspires them and completely abandons his former identity, fighting alongside the poor against the tyrannical rulers who, of course, will not sit idly by. A fierce battle is about to begin.
