The story takes place in 17th century Spain, where Alatriste (Viggo Mortensen) is a renowned army captain and the guardian of Balboa (Unax Ugalde). Alatriste hopes to raise Balboa to be a strong and tough man like himself; however, Balboa falls in love with a dangerous woman named Angelica (Elena Anaya), which worries Alatriste, as Angelica's father, Luis (Jesús Castejón), has a past grievance with him. On behalf of the head of the Inquisition, Frey (Blanca Portillo), Alatriste and Luis accept a very dangerous assassination mission. However, during the execution of the task, Alatriste is captivated by the noble spirit of the target, letting both of them go and bringing trouble upon himself.
