The fallen scholar Gu Shengzhai (played by Shi Jun) runs a calligraphy and painting shop, "Writing Letters and Couplets," in a small town while supporting his elderly mother. By chance, he meets Yang Zhiyun (played by Xu Feng), who has recently moved to the nearby abandoned Tunbao Fort, and develops feelings for her. At the same time, a member of the East Factory, Ouyang Nian (played by Tian Peng), comes to investigate, and a confrontation occurs between him and a nearby fortune teller (played by Bai Ying). Gu Sheng and his mother witness this, and they take the injured fortune teller to Yang Zhiyun’s place, discovering their true identities—the daughter of Yang Lian, the left vice minister who was executed for impeaching the eunuch Wei Zhongxian, and the General Shi Menqiao, who protects loyal officials. Since both are wanted by the imperial court and being hunted by the East Factory, Gu Sheng sets up elaborate schemes in the Tunbao to escape the pursuers, with the help of the high monk Huiyuan (played by Qiao Hong), hoping to evade capture and seek freedom. The film is adapted from Pu Songling's "Strange Stories from a Chinese Studio," specifically the story "The Heroine."
