Bearded Maurice (Timothy Spall ....Maurice Purley) is an exceptional photographer. His wife Monica encourages him to throw a party for his niece Roxanne, who works as a cleaner, to celebrate her 21st birthday, as Roxanne's mother Cynthia (Brenda Blethyn) is short on cash. Therefore, brother Maurice is willing to help his sister. During the preparations for the birthday party, Cynthia suddenly receives a call from a mysterious Black woman named Hortense (Marianne Jean-Baptiste). Through their conversation, she learns that Hortense is a Black optician living in London and that her mother has just passed away. After they meet, Hortense shares her background with Cynthia, a privacy that directly impacts Roxanne's birthday party… The film won the Palme d'Or at the 49th Cannes Film Festival, and Brenda Blethyn won Best Actress.
