At the beginning of the war, an introverted young soldier named Franz discovers an injured fox cub. The sight of the cub alone and helpless in the woods reminds him of his own childhood when he was sold by his father to a farmer. He cares for the cub as if it were his own child and takes it to occupied France. As he raises the fox, the past that Franz has been avoiding slowly catches up to him. He is torn between choosing to continue evading these painful memories or confronting them directly.
