Joe (played by Joaquin Phoenix) has a very tragic past. His father was a violent man who would unjustly beat Joe and his mother (played by Judith Roberts). Now, Joe and his mother live a dependent life. After serving in the military, he became an FBI agent and later took up work as a hitman, with "agent" John (played by John Doman) managing all aspects of Joe's work. One day, a state senator approaches Joe, hoping he can save his daughter Nina (played by Ekaterina Samsonov). Initially, Joe sees it as a routine task, but as time goes on, he begins to uncover the truth and starts to question the senator's true motives.
