On New Year's Eve 1999 in Macau, freshly graduated He Yixiang (played by Deng Jiale) eagerly longs to leave this small city and pursue his dream of teaching fine arts in Taiwan. His mother (played by Li Lezhi) had chosen to work in Taiwan for a long time to support the family because his father (played by Qin Xianwei) clung to his Cantonese opera dream, making him feel abandoned since childhood. However, when his beloved girlfriend Chengmei (played by Deng Jiaxin) tells him that Macau is her home, he reluctantly stays to teach art. Yixiang's passionate and straightforward teaching style almost cost him his job. Frustrated, he vows not to repeat his parents' mistakes; he wants to earn enough money to buy a house for Chengmei and their child. He resigns to work as a dealer in a casino, working hard until Chengmei leaves him, when he suddenly realizes that the more he struggles to protect his family, the more he drives them away.
