In 1942, Eric Erikson, a Swedish-American oil businessman living in Stockholm, suddenly found himself on a blacklist of Nazi collaborators in the U.S., eager to clear his name. This was all orchestrated by Allied intelligence to force Eric to become a spy, as he could easily travel in and out of Germany. Reluctantly, Eric complied, beginning to publicly display affinity for the Nazis, even at the expense of his closest Jewish friend, Kampel. Friends and family distanced themselves from him, but Kampel secretly believed that Eric had his reasons for doing so. Soon, Eric established connections with the Germans and involved the German oil tycoon Sir Gerhard Olendorff and oil dealer Otto Hause in forming a spy ring, codenamed "Lade." At the same time, Eric got in touch with Marianna, a devout member of the German underground resistance, disguising himself as a lover to evade the watchful eye of the Gestapo, continually memorizing and bringing back the information she provided to Sweden. Both Eric and Marianna were unhappy in their personal lives, and they fell deeply in love. Although Eric was a novice in espionage, he remained calm and resolute, avoiding danger multiple times. With Olendorff's efforts, Eric was allowed to "build" a refinery for Germany in Sweden, which granted him the opportunity to visit German oil factories. Once, Eric and Olendorff witnessed the Nazis execute striking workers, which deeply affected him, leading him to shift from being a coerced worker to taking conscious action. Their intelligence allowed the Allies to carry out accurate bombings, causing significant damage to Germany. After some time, Otto passed away due to illness, and fearing potential leaks, the Allied intelligence decided to halt Eric's group's activities. However, Eric was concerned for Marianna and, in a bid to recover crucial information regarding Nazi aviation fuel production, resolutely returned to Germany. Upon arriving in Berlin, Eric was imprisoned by the Gestapo and witnessed Marianna, who was arrested due to her exposed identity, being executed. Despite his overwhelming grief, he insisted he was merely Marianna's lover, and the Gestapo, having no evidence, had to release him. Eric obtained intelligence from Gerhard and proceeded to Hamburg to destroy Otto's confidential letters, but the following Gestapo became aware of him. Using his wits, Eric escaped and contacted the Allied spy network in Hamburg. With the help of underground organizations and Danish citizens, Eric crossed the border, traversed the strait from Copenhagen, and safely returned to Sweden.
