The film tells the story of a new deadly virus sweeping across the globe within days. Beth (played by Gwyneth Paltrow) dies suddenly after returning home to Minneapolis from a business trip in Hong Kong, leading her husband Thomas (played by Matt Damon) to assist Dr. Erin Mears (played by Kate Winslet) in uncovering the truth. Terrifyingly, patients with the same symptoms appear in large numbers worldwide, and the virus continues to spread. Conspiracy theorist journalist Alan (played by Jude Law) seizes the opportunity to spread damaging rumors about the government and medical institutions. Dr. Leonora Orantes (played by Marion Cotillard) is sent to Hong Kong to investigate the cause but is detained by local doctors (played by Chin Han) as a hostage for vaccine exchanges. With the efforts of Dr. Ellis Cheever (played by Laurence Fishburne) and young doctor Ally Hextall (played by Jennifer Ehle), a vaccine to treat the virus is finally developed, and the situation calms down. Notably, the film also features strong performances by Hong Kong stars Josie Ho and Johnny Xu.
