The pursuit of individual liberation leads Zi Jun (Lin Ying) to invade the life of Juan Sheng (Wang Xin Gang). They disregard the cold jibes and ridicule from others and resolutely come together. However, in the dark feudal society, happiness is always fleeting. The lack of mutual understanding before marriage, along with their personality differences, results in constant friction between them. After losing his job, Juan Sheng feels regret for his past blindness and naivety. Zi Jun notices the changes within Juan Sheng and realizes that this absurd marriage must come to an end. The disillusionment of love drives Zi Jun towards death. Her death plunges Juan Sheng into deep self-blame and pain, condemning his own ineptitude and cowardice. Having been influenced by the May Fourth Movement, Juan Sheng falls into contemplation. He gradually understands that this world cannot be changed by him, but he is unwilling to sink into despair, spending his days in deep thought, contemplating where the way out of life truly is... This film is adapted from the novel of the same name by Lu Xun.
