Post-war Germany is on the path to recovery, but Hans (Franz Rogowski) is sent directly from a concentration camp to prison to continue serving his sentence due to homosexual acts. This is because Article 175 of the penal code states that "homosexuality is a crime." Although his longing for love and freedom is destroyed, the most profound relationship in his life comes from his cellmate, the murderer Viktor (Georg Friedrich). Due to being classified as "175," Hans is looked down upon by Viktor as soon as he arrives in prison. Initially at odds with each other, the two gradually get to know each other as they share a cell. Viktor, skilled in tattooing, takes the initiative to help Hans shed his original sin by removing the Nazi markings on his body. When Viktor makes a mistake, Hans also takes the blame and ends up in solitary confinement, which makes Viktor grateful. They not only learn to respect each other but also become soulmates. During this time, Hans also meets his beloved Oscar (Thomas Prenn) in prison, and this love becomes his only solace until he is released... Unable to give up being himself, Hans soon ends up back in prison for homosexual acts. The high walls and electric fences become an endless cycle in his life. When he reunites with Viktor in prison, these two men, frequently shamed and abandoned by society, gradually develop a love that cannot be defined… Just at this moment, Germany announces the repeal of Article 175…
