The story takes place on the island of Inisherin in Ireland, where the skies are overcast, the sea winds howl, and life is monotonous and dull. The simple and optimistic Padraic (Colin Farrell) and the sensitive and introspective Colm (Brendan Gleeson) are childhood friends. However, one morning without warning, Colm chooses not to accompany Padraic and instead heads to the pub for a drink on his own. Padraic is baffled and seeks to understand the reason, but his former friend refuses to explain and firmly wants to end their friendship. Both Padraic and the island's residents are perplexed by this sudden change. Yet, Colm seems resolute, even going so far as to sever a finger to frighten Padraic away when he repeatedly attempts to engage him.
