Samantha (Naomi Watts) and her husband Cameron (Andrew Lincoln) have a happy family, and they yearn for a free life, traveling with their children every year. This year, the couple decided to vacation in Thailand, but an accident causes Samantha to suffer a spinal injury, leading to her being permanently paralyzed from the chest down. Samantha must say goodbye to her beloved outdoor sports and will spend the rest of her life in a wheelchair. The immense blow changes Samantha from her usual cheerful and optimistic self into a depression, even contemplating death. One day, the children bring home an injured magpie for Samantha to care for; this fragile little life awakens her maternal instincts and rekindles her will to survive.
