Walter (played by Richard Jenkins) has lived a monotonous life, teaching the same course for over twenty years, co-authoring a book he never truly contributed to, and struggling to connect with others while taking piano lessons with a private teacher. His life is as stagnant as a still pond. Changes begin when he attends an academic conference in place of Shelly, his co-author, who is unable to go due to her pregnancy. Upon returning to his New York home after the death of his wife, Walter is shocked to find two strangers in his apartment. After a misunderstanding, he learns that the young couple has been scammed into renting the place. Walter lets them stay; Tarek, an enthusiastic young man from Syria who loves drumming, and his girlfriend, a Black woman from Senegal, stir something in Walter. Touched by Tarek's lively spirit, Walter learns to drum and joins him at a park for drumming practice with minorities.
One day, after practicing with Tarek, Walter hurries home but delays while passing through the subway because of the drum. Tarek misses the best chance to go through the turnstile and gets arrested by the police while jumping over it. Walter then discovers they are illegal immigrants. He runs around hiring a lawyer, but progress is slow until Tarek's mother, Mouna (played by Hiyam Abbas), comes to worry about her son. Walter calms Mouna’s anxious feelings and takes her around New York to lift her spirits, and they develop a mutual understanding. Walter takes a long leave from school, deciding to stay in New York to engage in what he believes is truly meaningful and worth doing.
