Freddie (played by David Douche), a young man with no purpose, lives in a small town in northern France. His mother supports the family by running a small restaurant, and her indulgence prevents Freddie from considering his future. He either rides his motorcycle around town with a few friends or enjoys water-related pleasures with his girlfriend, Marie (played by Marjorie Cottreel). In this town that is so peaceful it borders on boredom, even death fails to stir much rippling emotion. However, a group of Arab immigrants changes Freddie's life trajectory. The assertive and headstrong Arab youth Kader (played by Kader Chaatouf) makes advances toward Marie, arousing strong resentment from Freddie and his friends… This film won the 1997 British Academy Film Awards Sutherland Award, a special mention at the 1997 Cannes Film Festival for the Camera d'Or, the 1997 International Critics' FIPRESCI Prize at the Chicago International Film Festival, the European Discovery of the Year at the 1997 European Film Awards, the Jean Vigo Prize for Best Film in 1997, and the Jury Prize at the São Paulo International Film Festival.
