In the 2008 global financial crisis, a few visionary investment geniuses on Wall Street saw through the illusion of the bubble before the American credit storm in 2007. They made significant profits by shorting subprime CDS, becoming some of the few investors to profit massively during the financial disaster. Jared Vennett (played by Ryan Gosling) is a Deutsche Bank agent who turns a $4 billion deal into $3.7 billion in revenue; Michael Burry (played by Christian Bale) is a one-eyed hedge fund manager; Mark Baum (played by Steve Carell) comes from a Wall Street family; and Ben Hockett (played by Brad Pitt) is a retired banker from Cornwall Capital.
