Paris, from 5 to 7 PM. The beautiful singer Cléo (played by Corinne Marchand) wanders the streets of Paris. Dressed in black, she removes her wig and silently navigates her inner fears and anxieties. Everything is triggered by a health report; she worries that she may be diagnosed with stomach cancer, as predicted by a fortune-teller. An anxious Cléo roams the streets, cafes, or her home, encountering various men—her lovers or friends—with whom she shares every segment of her life, but seemingly no one truly understands her. Until, at last, she meets a young soldier about to head off to the battlefield in Algeria. Through their conversation, Cléo begins to see the world anew and faces reality with calmness. This debut feature by French director Agnès Varda, "Cléo from 5 to 7," is a significant work in the French New Wave cinema. The film was nominated for the Palme d'Or at the 1962 Cannes Film Festival.
