The film is based on an article by Franklin Foer published in The New York Times, focusing on a man who ingratiated himself with the powerful, Albrecht Muth (played by Waltz), who seduces and successfully marries a much older wealthy woman, Viola Drath (played by Redgrave). The two married in 1990, when he was 26 and she was 71. Muth successfully ascends into high society through Drath, but his true intentions remain hidden in the shadows until Drath is discovered dead in their Georgetown home in 2011. Muth was convicted of first-degree murder in 2014 and sentenced to 50 years in prison without the possibility of parole.
