Young Chen Qiushui (played by Chen Kun) is a tutor for the young Wang Biyun's (played by Vivian Hsu) younger brother, Yumeng. He is clear-minded and charming, with a joyful approach to learning. They sing together to learn English, and their time is simple and happy, leading them to quickly fall in love. However, Chen Qiushui is a leftist and must flee to the mainland to escape persecution. Although it seems to be a brief separation, he still makes a lifelong promise to Wang Biyun before he leaves, vowing to remain steadfast. But the separation feels long. Qiushui even loses contact with Taiwan, yet the waiting and longing remain buried in his heart. Army nurse Wang Jindi (played by Li Bingbing) confesses her love for him and pursues him. After the war ends, Wang Jindi follows Qiushui to Tibet, caring for him meticulously. Qiushui also attempts to search for Biyun multiple times in vain, deciding to keep his old feelings buried within as he does not want to disappoint the determined Wang Jindi. They get married, but fate's mockery lurks nearby. Qiushui does not know that Wang Biyun, still in Taiwan, remains unmarried her whole life, waiting for him.
