The story takes place in England in 1959. Florence (played by Emily Mortimer) has recently lost her husband, but the strong woman does not indulge in grief; she knows she must continue to live bravely. Florence arrives in the remote seaside town of Hardborough, where she invests all her savings to open a small bookstore. It is the only bookstore in the area, and until then, the townspeople had never been exposed to literature. Florence's bookstore opens a new door to the world for the townsfolk, and the entire town undergoes changes because of her store. The existence of the bookstore also leads Florence to meet kindred spirit Edmund (played by Bill Nighy), while her uniqueness attracts the attention of those with ulterior motives.
