After divorcing her ex-husband Tony (Jake Gyllenhaal), Susan (Amy Adams) marries a man named Hutton (Armie Hammer). Although their marriage has lasted over a decade, it is clear that the relationship has long lost its passion and is showing signs of weariness. Meanwhile, the crisis facing Hutton's company has driven this once wealthy family to the brink of bankruptcy, and Susan's severe insomnia continues to haunt her life. One day, Susan receives an unexpected email; Tony sends her his newly written, unpublished novel "Nocturnal Animals." He tells her that this is a book written specifically for her and hopes she will read it. As she reads the novel, Susan constantly recalls the process of her relationship with Tony, from their romance to their falling out, during which some dirty and unknown secrets gradually surface.
