The Black community in Brooklyn, New York, is home to people from various ethnic groups: Black, Italian immigrants, Koreans... Italian immigrant Sal (Danny Aiello) and his two sons have run a pizzeria here for a long time, while Mookie (Spike Lee) works as a delivery man and often clashes with Sal's son. Radio Raheem (Bill Nunn) is a young man who loves to walk around with a boombox playing loud music. On a hot day, Black youth Buggin' Out (Giancarlo Esposito) notices that there are no Black figures in the celebrity photos hanging on the wall of the pizzeria, which greatly displeases him; when Radio visits the pizzeria, Sal asks him to turn off the boombox. Feeling aggrieved, Buggin' Out and Radio decide to confront Sal, and during their argument, Sal smashes Radio's boombox. Enraged, Radio fights with Sal. The police arrive, and more and more bystanders gather, leading to an imminent racial riot... This film was nominated for Best Supporting Actor and Best Adapted Screenplay at the 62nd Academy Awards, and its success propelled Black director Spike Lee into stardom in Hollywood.
