In the third year of the Xuantong era, a poor child from a remote mountain village named Lai Xi sees the village's grand eunuch, Xiao De Zhang, returning home in splendid attire, and feels envy. Despite her reluctance, Lai Xi's mother (played by归亚蕾) is persuaded by his father (played by林正英) to have their son undergo castration and enter the palace, hoping for a better life for the entire family. However, after growing up, Lai Xi (played by莫少聪) does not find the expected wealth and comfort, as the Qing dynasty is soon overthrown by the Republic of China, and the eunuchs in the palace are no longer allowed to stay. Lai Xi joins a theatrical troupe and becomes an apprentice to the troupe leader (played by洪金宝), where he reunites with his childhood friend Zhao Di (played by温碧霞), who mistakenly thinks he is a revolutionary and wishes to offer herself to him. After learning of Lai Xi's status as a eunuch, Zhao Di leaves in disappointment. To escape from warlords, Lai Xi sneaks back into the Forbidden City, where he receives care from Eunuch Ding (played by午马). After a series of political struggles, Lai Xi and Eunuch Ding are expelled from the palace, and soon, a pregnant Zhao Di appears before Lai Xi again. Many years have passed, and just when Lai Xi believes he can achieve happiness, Zhao Di's revolutionary husband (played by刘德华) reappears. Meanwhile, Eunuch Ding, driven by blind loyalty to the emperor, attempts to take Lai Xi to the Japanese consulate to care for Puyi. What choice will Lai Xi make? This film is adapted from a semi-autobiographical novel by the eunuch Sun Yaoting. It marks Zhang Zhiliang's directorial debut after transitioning from producer, and it is also a representative work that earned莫少聪 a nomination for Best Actor at the Golden Horse Awards.
