When one person asks another "Do you dare?" the other must say "I dare," that's the rule of the game. The encounter between boy Julien and girl Sophie begins with such a childlike prank, with a beautiful iron box as the witness to their game. Cursing, disrupting the class, urinating in the principal's office, wearing underwear on the outside... they play the game for over ten years, daring to do everything except admit their love for each other. Sophie (Marion Cotillard) proposes that they separate for four years, with the challenge being whether Julien (Guillaume Canet) dares to hurt Sophie. Four years pass in a blur, and Julien finds Sophie; to continue the game, he decides to marry someone else and invites Sophie to be his bridesmaid. Hurt, Sophie throws the iron box at Julien during his wedding, asking, "Dare you back out?" The closest of friends end up hurting each other the deepest. Both heartbroken, they agree to separate again for ten years. Over the decade, Julien has everything: family, career, friends, but without Sophie, it's as if he's lost his heart.
