Larry Gopnik (played by Michael Stuhlbarg) is a physics professor at a university in the Twin Cities, Minnesota. Just as the school is deciding whether to grant him tenure, a Korean student complains to Larry about unfair grading, and when rejected, attempts to bribe him. Meanwhile, Larry's wife Judith (played by Sari Lennick) reveals that she has fallen in love with widower Sy Ableman (played by Fred Melamed) and requests a divorce. Additionally, Larry's unemployed, neurotic brother Arthur (played by Richard Kind) is increasingly becoming a burden, his son's bar mitzvah is approaching, his daughter is stealing money for a nose job, and an anonymous letter threatens to ruin his future. Desperate, Larry turns to several Jewish rabbis for help, but can faith really lead him out of this dilemma? The film was nominated for the Best Original Screenplay at the BAFTA Awards and for Best Actor in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy at the Golden Globes (Michael Stuhlbarg).
