"Two Pairs Half" tells the story of two elderly people, Yang Dama and Wu Laosan, who live in a poor rural area where the economy is low and bad customs prevail. They set a "gentleman's agreement" for their children: Yang Dama's son, Jinguo, and daughter, Taoye, are to "exchange marriages" with Wu Laosan's son, Chenglin, and daughter, Qiumei. When their children learn of this arrangement, they are too upset to express their feelings. Now, the world has changed, policies have warmed people's hearts, and every family has become wealthy. Yang Dama and Wu Laosan are even happier and wish to resolve this issue as soon as possible. However, at this moment, Qiumei proposes to back out of the engagement, refusing a loveless marriage, which frustrates Wu Laosan. Despite his life experience, he finds himself at a loss with his daughter's stubbornness and reluctantly visits Yang's house. Before he can finish speaking, Yang Dama is already furious; not only has the engagement failed, but they have also suffered shame. Yang Dama declares that if Qiumei does not marry her son Jinguo, then Wu Laosan's son cannot take her daughter away, which puts Wu Laosan in a difficult position. Although Chenglin and Taoye's parents made the match, the two have already fallen in love over the past few years. Learning about the potential dissolution of their engagement, they decided to take matters into their own hands and secretly obtained a marriage certificate. When Yang Dama finds out, she is furious. Qiumei discovers that Jinguo does not love her because he has another beloved, a remarkable girl named Wang Chunlan from a neighboring village, who is talented and well-matched with Jinguo. Qiumei discards old-fashioned views and actively helps them with their relationship. Yang Dama does not agree to the cancellation; instead, she uses this as an opportunity. At the joyous wedding ceremony, another bride suddenly appears, and after Qiumei explains the reason, Yang Dama is left speechless while everyone laughs. The marriages of the two young couples end happily, leaving only Qiumei single; nevertheless, she remains hopeful about life and the future. Yesterday is gone; today has arrived.
