On Christmas, a 14-year-old Russian girl dies from childbirth complications in a London hospital. Russian midwife Anna (played by Naomi Watts) feels something is off and secretly investigates the girl's background, only to discover that the girl is not only an illegal immigrant but also deeply embroiled in sex trafficking as a young prostitute. Under the guidance of her uncle, Anna finds the remote Russian community in London. Initially, Anna just wants to gather information from her uncle's old friend Simon (played by Armin Mueller-Stahl), but after a chance encounter with the mysterious and brooding Nikolai (played by Viggo Mortensen), she finds the truth to be far more complex than she imagined.
